16 Days of Activism

December 7th, 2011  •  Category: Social Welfare Program

During the Stopping Violence Against Women Day event in Mae Sariang attendees discussed the White Ribbon meaning and the story of the Unforgettable Butterflies. The Mirabel sisters, three women from the Dominican Republic who were assassinated for their political activism in the 1960s are known as the “Unforgettable Butterflies.”  They became a symbol of the crisis of violence against women in Latin America. November 25th, the date of their assassination, was chosen as the International Stop Violence Against Women’s Day to commemorate their lives and promote global recognition of the pandemic of gender-based violence.
